The bid room is full of egos. Whether is the production manager locking down the template and refusing to unlock it until after a duel to the death, the graphics artist always knowing best, the subject matter expert that thinks the client is clueless and they shou
ld have asked a much better question instead or the bid leaders that pick a position and stick to it until the grim death. The question is, who should have the biggest ego in the room?

The answer to this one is straightforward – the bid director who holds the ultimate accountability for win or lose, success or failure should have the biggest ego, quite rightly. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. They are often and mistakenly usurped in the ego ranking by the consultant that is employed to support the bid effort and help to make the response as good as possible. The driver for the consultant can often become less about the win/ loss factor and more about their personal power of influence.

To the bid leaders out there – understand your position and the responsibility it brings and select external support that strengthens your position and ability to succeed.
