In the times of the Roman Empire (pollice verso), the position of the Emperor’s thumb indicated a life or death decision – literally. Fast forward to 2016 and the thumb has been replaced with much more subtle indicators of a decision. Now, a hand shake, a smile, even a request for more detailed information about your solution from a buyer can indicate the choice has gone your way.
But when do we want to see this positive indication of being “the chosen one”? For all of us, in all aspects of our life, the sooner the better. Whether it is a $2bn infrastructure contract or the selection process for teams on the oval at lunchtime – we all want to be picked first.
The astute amongst us will use this indication of success to inform and guide the allocation of resources into one tender/ project over another, prioritising those opportunities where the likelihood of getting the metaphorical ‘big thumbs up’ is the greatest.
